Annuals and perennials

The posts about MBOTMA have made me think about this: Many bands have selections that are audience favorites, and they play those favorites at every show. In the MMO, we keep tunes in our active list for about two years, and the move them out to make room for new music. I do that because I always want to hear something new. But it's show biz, and I wonder if our concert set list should have a few perennials.

Do you think our set lists should always include some favorites from the past? If so, which ones?

I think it would be nice to have a "perennial" or two -- something that becomes a signature piece which we've perfected. A couple that might be candidates are Jota and Joropo de Lara (even though that's a current tune, maybe it wouldn't ever be retired and would become a perennial).

There are a variety of opinions on this, as was discussed at rehearsal last Monday.
When I purchase a music CD, it’s because I’m familiar with the music, and I like it, and I want to hear it again. Or maybe I like the artist or the type of music (such as James Taylor or bluegrass), and I’ll buy anything by that artist or in that genre. When I go to a bluegrass concert, and they announce they’re going to play “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” I don’t think, “Oh, no, I already know that song.” Instead, I think, “Great – I love that song!” Familiar music is what everyone loves. If you gave a list of 50 songs to the audience, asking them which songs they’d like to hear, I believe most would select tunes they already know. I do agree that a few would like to hear something new and different.
I heard someone else mention that as we approach 4th of July, we should perform music for that occasion.
My favorites are Santa Lucia, Jota, La Tapica, A Tear, Partita Antiqua, Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da, Smitten, Jean’s Musette/Howard’s Habanera, and Philippino Waltz, but there are more. Maybe the MMO could take a vote.
I have a strong opinion on this (pleasing the audience) – hopefully not too strong! :-) (smile)

I am for playing some thing as a signature piece. I would vote for "Recuerdos De La Alhambra". The Frye arrangement is so much better than the original Solo Guitar piece but retains the Plucked String Instrument character. The tremelo on Mandolin and Mandolin family instruments has more affect than the Guitar Tremelo which even with the Classical Guitar Virtuosoes is uneven. I also like "Partita Antiqua".
